HYUN BO YOO (1946 - 2010)

In the Periodicals Reading Room located to the left of “the dome” as you face the Canton Public Library from outside, hangs an original oil painting by artist Hyun Bo Yoo.  Purchased c.1983, this large landscape over the fireplace depicts a field with wetlands and a variety of colorful plant life surrounding the small figure of a woman and two children at play, along the right hand side of the canvas.

Chicataubet, Sachem of the Massachusett tribe

Four hundred years ago this year when the first of the European settlers were recorded as having arrived on Massachusetts’ shores at currently-named Plymouth, the sachem or Indian chief of the Neponset band of the Massachuset tribe of natives, which were settled mostly around Massachusetts Bay, was Chicataubet.

Kitchamakin (pre 1620 through mid 17th century)

Chicataubut, Indian sachem of the Massachusett tribe, oversaw that land currently known as Canton, Stoughton and Sharon--a forested wilderness when the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth in 1620. Kitchamakin, Chicataubut’s brother, was appointed acting sachem when smallpox claimed the Indian chief’s life in 1633.
