The Native American surname, Ahauton, appears repeatedly in Canton’s very early records-- from the mid 1600’s through the 1700’s--and is found as early in the town’s recorded history as that of any Christian family surname.

The youngest child and only son in the family of five born to Edward Augustus Holyoke Hemenway and Mary (Tileston) Hemenway, young Augustus Hemenway was raised in great wealth balanced by an example of philanthropy set by both of his parents.
